Origin/meaning
Obernkirchen was granted city rights in 1615, but already in 1571 it received the right to have its own seal and arms. These arms already showed the local convent, which was founded in 1167, and that owned the town until 1565. The small shield shows the arms of the Counts of Schaumburg, with a change in colours (see the district arms). This change of colours was already mentioned in the original document from 1571.
