Origin/meaning

Gladbeck received city rights in 1919 and its arms were officially granted in 1929. The city grew rapidly in the late 19th century, due to coal mining, which is symbolised by the miner's tools in the right half of the arms. The left half shows the three wolf-hooks, derived from the arms of the Lords of Brabeck (see also Hemer), who lived for many centuries on the Wittring castle near the village.
