Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on November 13, 1967.

Unna received city rights in 1280 from the Counts of Mark. The first seal dates from the same time and already shows the city wall with two banners with the chequered bar of the Counts of Mark. The arms were derived from this seal and have never been really changed, except for the colour of the roofs, which was blue until 1967, when the arms were officially confirmed.
