Origin/meaning

The settlement was founded in the vici­nity of silver ore deposits in 1547 and as early as in 1575 it was promoted by Emperor Rudolph II to the status of a royal mining town. This is expressed by the crowned Bohemian lion in the left section of the arms; the letter "R" above the lion's head is the initial letter of the sovereign's name and the crossed mining hammers in the lower part of the right section indicate the character of a mining town.
