JAMES HUBERT BLENK
Born : August 6, 1856
Deceased : April 20, 1917
Bishop of Puerto Rico, 1899-1906
Archbishop of New Orleans, 1931-106-1917
Bishop of Puerto Rico |
Archbishop of New Orleans |
Official blazon
- (personal half) Argent, a crossmill-rind gules charged with an escallop of the field; a canton of the Society of Mary.
Origin/meaning
In Puerto Rico the bishop used arms showing the holy spirit. These were changed after moving to New Orleans.
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the New Orleans arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The peculiar form of cross resembles the pattern used on mill-stones and was chosen because his frbears were for generations millers in Bavaria (Germany). The shell is the emblem of St. James, the Archbishop's patron. Following the practice of Marist prelates, the arms of the Society appear in the canton. These arms, like those of many of the Societies and Orders, have differed at various times in minor details. The form here given is the one which the local Marists themselves preferred at the time.
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of archbishop.
