Origin/meaning
The arms of the city of Winterthur show a variation of the arms of the Counts of Kyburg (see also Thurgau). Initially the seals of the city showed the arms with only the lower lion (seal known from 1252). The second seal, known from 1276, already showed the complete Kyburg arms. The village of Niederwinthertur was a possession of the Counts of Kyburg until the last Count of Kyburg died in 1264. Their successors, the Counts of Habsburg granted the city rights in 1264 and probably also the right to use the complete Kyburg arms. The colours are known since the 15th century.
