German In Silber ein rotbezungter goldbewehrter befiederter roter Adlerkopf, seitlich und un ten von drei sechsstrahligen blauen Sternen begleitet.

Origin/meaning

The oldest seal of the city dates from 1295 and shows a city wall with two towers. Between the towers the Margrave of Brandenburg, shown as a knight, appears. He holds in the one hand a spear, in the other a small shield with the eagle of Brandenburg.

The second seal is known from 1394 and shows the above arms with the eagle and stars. The eagle probably is the eagle of Brandenburg, the meaning of the stars is not known.

From 1513 the great seal of the city shows an angel, holding the shield of Brandenburg. In the 1920, Hupp showed this composition as arms for the city (see below).

In 1939 the city decided to apply for arms based on the seal from 1394.
