Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on October 13, 1819, confirmed on February 28, 1840 and re-granted on October 1, 1991.
The arms show St. Gillis, the local patron saint, which also appeared on the 18th century seal of the village. To the right of the saint is the beet of the Waasland region. For the history of the beet, see Sint-Niklaas.
The colours of the 1819/1840 arms are the Dutch national colours, as in 1813 the mayor applied without indicating the colours. The arms were thus granted in the national colours. When the arms were confirmed after the Belgian independence, the colours were not changed. Only in 1991 the colours were slightly changed.
