Origin/meaning
Valkininkai received city rights from Stanislaus Augustus on June 26, 1792. At the same day he granted the new city the use of a golden lion on a red (round) shield. The lion supposedly symbolised strength, pride and nobleness.
In 1793 the arms were abolished, only to be regranted on March 30, 1993.
The sinister faced position of the lion is most likely the consequence of a clerk's heraldic illiteracy: that was very usual for the state chancellery of 1790s. Anyway, the arms became historic, and it was thus decided in modern times not to "correct" it.
