ZITTAU

Origin/meaning
The arms show in the first and fourth quarter the silver lion of Bohemia, as Zittau received city rights and royal rank of the Kings of Bohemia in 1255. From 1320-1347 the city was a possession of the Dukes of Jauer, a branch of the Dukes of Silezia, hence the eagle of Silezia in the second and third quarter.
The escutcheon shows the letter Z, the town's initial.
Seal from around 1900 |
