Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on January 31, 1818 and confirmed on May 13, 1913. New arms were granted on July 28, 1978.
The current arms combine the old arms with the arms of Moerzeke.
The old arms show on the right half a branch of a hemp plant and on the left half a branch of a flax plant (with blue flower). Both were important crops in the early 19th century. Hemp was used for ropes, flax for linen.
The municipality used in the 1930s a crown on the arms, but this crown was never granted.
