Official blazon
In Blau eine durchgehende silberne Zinnenmauer, belegt mit einem goldenen Schildchen, darin ein mit einer silbernen Schrägleiste überdeckter, rot bewehrter schwarzer Löwe; über ihm wachsend ein rot gekleideter Wächter, der in ein silbernes Horn stößt, auf dem Kopf einen roten Spitzhut mit silbernem Stulp; im grünen Schildfuß ein silberner Wellenbalken, darin zwei zugewendete rote Krebse.
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on July 3, 1518 by Georg Schenk von Limpurg, Bishop of Bamberg. The arms show in the upper part a city wall and a guard (Wächter, a canting element), and in the lower the Ebrach river. The meaning of the lobsters is not known. The small shield shows the arms of the State of Bamberg, to which the town historically belonged until 1803. In the late 18th century often only a lobster was used as arms for the town. The historical arms were restored in 1931.
