The arms are based on the legend of two free farmers who were mentioned in the 8<sup>th</sup> century. This means that Föhrste was the oldest village in the Kreis Alfeld. They had to defend their freedom with swords, which is symbolised in the arms.

The arms were granted on July 6, 1949.

The arms keep the sword from the previous arms (see below), but now symbols for industry (cogwheels) and agriculture (wheatear) are added.

The previous were granted on October 18, 1938.
