I have no information on the origin or meaning of the present arms. Any information is welcome !
The previous arms were granted in 1952.
The arms show three hands, and symbolise the historical court of justice, which had three members, the Dreigeschworenenrat (three-sworn-council). The court existed from 1566-1832 and had its seat in Jork.
The oldest seals of the area date from the 16th century and showed a key, derived from the arms of Bremen as the area was ruled by the archbishops of Bremen. In the late 19th century this (blue) key was placed in a silver shield, and these arms were (unofficially) used until 1952, see below.
