Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on May 30, 1953 and slightly changed on October 1, 1980. These arms replaced the arms granted on April 14, 1824 and confirmed on April 7, 1838, which showed the chevrons in black instead of red.
The arms are derived from the arms of the 13th century Lords of Menen. The arms have been used by the city since many centuries and appeared already on the 16th century seal of the city. The arms have never changed since, but were accidentally granted in the wrong colours in 1824. This was corrected in 1953 and in 1980 the crown was changedin to a mural crown.
