Arms of Skjern

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were registered in 1960.

Skjern is placed close to the delta of and gives name to the second largest river i Denmark: Skjern Aa. This is symbolized by the silvery waving line in the middle. The silver color is derived from the original meaning of the name Skjern which is a derivation from an old Danish word "skær" - meaning something thats pure, clean etc.

The key symbolises the municipal rights in itself. In old age municipal town in Denmark was closed at night and the key was kept by the Mayor.

Skjern was until a little decade ago one of the most religious places in Denmark and was known for having meeting houses for 4 different protestant communities. The cross in the end of the key refers to this.

The star in the bottom is a reminisecnce of the fact that the village of Boelling nearby Skjern was a court site around 500 years ago. The star -probably a symbol for the spiked mace used by the officers of the court- is known form the court´s seal since 1584.
