The new arms were adopted in 2916 and became official on January 1st, 2017.
The new arms refer to the formerly important hunting in the whole area, not only the city of Sandefjord itself. The colours ar ethe old colours of Sandefjord.
The previous arms were granted on May 9, 1914.
The Viking ship symbolises the famous Gokstad ship, that was found near Sandefjord in 1880, one of the best preserved Vikings ships known. The whale symbolises the fact that in the late 19th and early 20th century Sandefjord was a main harbour for whalers in the Southern oceans.
