Much about this coat of arms commemorates the Battle of Stoney Creek, an important victory for the British/Canadians during the war of 1812. The cannon obviously refers to this battle, as does the crest (which is a monument built to commemorate said battle). The farmhouse is from that era, and may also refer to something of the history of that war. The maple leaf represents Canada, while the deer represents the wildlife of Ontario. Presumably, the woman represents the importance of women in the building of the community (unless that's Laura Secord, the famed War of 1812 heroine who warned the British of an impending American attack, and who never actually sold chocolate pudding).

The motto, "Antiquum Assero Decus" means "I maintain my ancient glory", another reference to the history of the city.

The compartment represents a stone-lined creek, an obvious reference to the name.
