Origin/meaning

Schleiden was sometimes mentioned as a city in the 13th century, but there is no historical proof for city rights. The oldest known seal dates from the 14th century and shows a baldaquin under which two persons hold a shield with the lion of the Counts of Schleiden. The latter seals also show the same composition. The arms of the city, however, were identical to the arms of the counts, so without the supporters from the seal.

On August 19, 1976 the arms were confirmed, but now in green, taken from the arms of Gemünd.
