Region : Catalonia
Province : Tarragona
Official blazon
Escut caironat: d'atzur, un vaixell d'or envelat d'or amb 4 pals de gules, acompanyat al cap d'una torre d'argent oberta. Per timbre una corona mural de vila.
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on June 18, 1991.
This tourist town on the Costa Daurada was, in the Middle Ages, an important harbour. In fact, the fleet of king Jaume I departed from here to the conquest of Majorca in 1229: this historical episode is represented by the ship with the sail depicted with the royal arms of Catalonia-Aragon (four pales Gules on Or). The tower above is the Torre Vella (or Old Tower), built in 1530 to watch out and prevent the attacks of pirates and corsairs.
