ZELZATE
Province : Oost-Vlaanderen
Official blazon
Doorsneden 1. in goud een uitkomende leeuw van sabel houdende in de rechtervoorpoot een dubbele adelaar van hetzelfde 2. in sinopel een paal van zilver.
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on October 6, 1992.
The upper part of the arms show the arms of Assenede, as historically the municipality belonged (partly) to the Assenede Ambacht (region). The lower half symbolises the Gent-Terneuze canal, which played a major role in the development of the village. The silver is the canal, the green the green fields, which also indicates the (historical) importance of agriculture for the municipality.
