Region : Pohjois-Karjala
Former province : Itä-Suomi (until 1997 Pohjois-Karjala)
Incorporated into : 2005 Joensuu

Kiihtelysvaara Kuntavaakuna / Kommunvapen

Official blazon

Mustassa kentässä neljä hopeista oravannahkaa vieretysten.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on April 10, 1962.

The arms refer to the word kiihtelys after which the town is named. The word refers to an old fur trade measure of 40 skins and also to four tikkuri, a measure for 10 squirrel furs. The arms thus show 4 squirrel skins for four tikkuri.
