VOLKENSCHWAND

State : Bayern
District (Kreis) : Kelheim (until 1972 Mainburg)
Additions : 1978 Leibersdorf, Grossgundertshausen

Wappen von Volkenschwand

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on February 10, 1987.

The upper right part represents the village of Volkenschwand. The silver bend is taken from the arms of the Cathedral Chapter of Regensburg, as the chapter owned many rights in the village for centuries. The burning tree branch is a canting element for the -schwand part of the name. This is derived from Abschwenden, to burn down of fields for creating agricultural land.

The cross in the uppe rleft field represents the Holy Cross church in Großgundertshausen.

The base is taken from the arms of the Lords von Leibersdorf, who owned the estate of the same name in Leibersdorf, until their extiction in the 16th century. Their successors kept the arms of the estate as part of their own arms.
