Former province : 1997-2009 Itä-Suomi (until 1997 Kuopio)
Additions : 1970 Iisalmen maalaiskunta
Official blazon
Aaltokoroisesti mustakultakatkoinen kilpi, jonka yläkentässä pystyssä jännitetty käsijousi, kokonaan kultaa, ja alakentässä kaksi piilukirvestä ristikkäin ja niiden varsien ympärillä saaneena neljä ruusua asetettuina 1+2+1; kaikki mustia.
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on September 24, 1964.
The bow and arrow are taken from the provincial arms of Savolax. The division per bend wavy symbolises the river Koljonvirta. The axes symbolise the fact that the woods had to be cleared before the city could be built. The roses symbolise the flowers growing instead of the woods.
The present arms are based on the arms granted in 1894, see below.
