Balzhofen became a separate municipality at the end of the 18<sup>th</sup> century. The oldest seal of the municipality showed already the bend in the upper and a single horseshoe in the lower part of the shield. The colours of the bend are not known, but it is likely that it is the bend of [[Baden (State)|Baden]]. Later during the 19<sup>th</sup> century the bend was removed and the seals showed only a horseshoe on a shield. The State Archives proposed new arms in 1900. The new arms show the arms of the Lords of Windeck, who ruled in the area during the 13-16<sup>th</sup> century, combined with the horseshoe.
