Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on July 11, 2001.

The head in the arms symbolises Gonçalo Mendes da Maia, a key figure in the history of the Maia and one of the most prominent figures involved in the construction of the Portuguese nationality. The Maltese Cross refers to the Order of Malta who played an important role in the local history. The crown refers to St. Mary, the local patron saint. The wavy bar symbolises the Leça river.
