Opladen was the seat of the Lords of Upladen, a branch and vassals of the Counts of Berg, who ruled most of the area between the Rhein and Wupper. The village became one of the main judicial centres of the Counts of Berg until 1558. In 1858 the town became a city and the arms were granted in 1883. The arms show the oldest arms of the Lords of Upladen and the Counts of Berg.
