Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1953.

The arms combine elements from the arms of two families that played an important role in the local history. The ship is taken from the arms of the Lords of Urfahr, who lived in the 15th century in a castle in the village of Urfahrn. The griffin with the knife is taken from the arms of Johann von Messener, who founded a large castle-estate in 1721 in the municipality. The knife (Messer) is a canting symbol.
