Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on September 1, 1969.
The municipality was founded in 1966 after the merger of 6 municipalities. The name is derived from the ancient Bergkamen, of hamlets, in the area. The arms shows a structure of 6 benzene rings; the hexagonal structure symbolises the six former municipalities. The molecules as such symbolise the importance of the chemical industry in the city. The colours are derived from the arms of the County of Mark, to which the area historically belonged.
