Origin/meaning

Rhens received city rights in the late 14th century, but was already an important town for a century. The oldest seals date from 1291 and shows two crossed keys under a cross. The cross is the symbol of the State of Köln, the keys are the symbol for St. Peter, the patron saint of Köln. The city was a possession of the Archbishops of Köln for many centuries.

The present arms appear on the second seal, dating form the early 14th century. The composition thus has not changed since, but the colours have often been changed during the centuries.
