Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on March 30, 1967.

The bars are taken from the arms of the Duchy of Luxembourg, to which the area historically belonged. In 1414 Waxweiler received city rights from Irmgard von Bolchen, ruler of Neuerburg. The cross in the arms is taken from the arms of the Lords of Neuerburg.

The red field of the other half refers to the local patron saint, St. John Baptist. The snake and hook are taken from the arms of Culnerus Daniel, priest in Waxweiler from 1606-1622, whose arms can be seen on the entrance of the local church and parish hall.
