Origin/meaning
The arms were adopted in 1993.
The lion in the arms is the lion of the Welfen dynasty, which ruled the city in the 13th century and after 1428. The seals of the city always showed the lion, as did the historical arms. The hearts are also taken from the arms of the family as Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg.
The waves below symbolise the Schunter and Mühlenbach rivers.
