Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on November 17, 1936.

The arms combine elements of the arms of the former rulers in the region; the black cross of the Archbishops of Köln, the lion of the Duchy Berg and the chequered bar of the Counts of the Mark. The bishops had already possessions in the region in the 11th century, the Dukes of Berg still had an estate in the 18th century and most of the area belonged to the Counts of the Mark since the 14th century until the early 19th century.
