Origin/meaning
As common in episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The chief of the personal arms is the arms of the Order of Discalced Carmelites of which the bishop belongs. On the base is a sable and argent checkered adapted from the Labayen family arms. His episcopal motto is "Dominus est" from the Gospel of John chapter 21 verse 7, where the beloved disciple shouted "It is the Lord" and reflects a recognition of God in all circumstances of lite
