Origin/meaning
The first half shows a tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa) flower and a carpenter's plane; symbols of Saint Joseph, husband of Mary and worker, patron and holder of the diocese in which the Bishop is to serve as pastor. The tuberose is in Spanish a Vara de San José (Staff of St. Joseph). Above these is a banner with the words "ITE AD IOSEPH" ("Go to Joseph"), an invitation to approach the adoptive father of Jesus, who meet all the visitors of the Cathedral Church on the threshold of their main entrance. It is also an invitation to feel the Cathedral as everyone's home.
The stars represent the mantle of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother and protector of all the peoples of Latin America. To Mary and to her care and love, confides Mons. Fajardo his Diocese and his Episcopal ministry.
The base shows a chalice with wine and a bread, symbolising the Eucharist, source (the tip of the shield) and culmen (the concave edge of the shield) of the life of the Church. It is in the encounter with Jesus the Eucharist that the bishop has always found strength, grace and joy. In it he has learned the dimensions of concrete charity, dedication and service, as well as fraternity and closeness with brothers.
The motto Servidor de la Alegría means "Server of Joy".
