Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1936.

The arms are based on the old seal of the city, known from 1367, and show the local patron saint at the time, the Norwegian St. Olaf. A second, smaller, seal from the 15th century shows a shield with a crowned N and an axe. Both compositions have been used as arms for the city. Only around 1900 the State Heraldic Office decided on the use of the arms based on the oldest seal. It took, however, until 1936 before the arms were officially granted.
