Origin/meaning
The arms were granted in 1970.
Lemgo received city rights in 1190 by Lord Bernhard II zu Lippe. The oldest seal dates from around 1200 and shows a walled city with a small shield with the rose of Lippe. In the 13th century the seals showed only the rose, with the head of St. Mary, the patron saint of the city, in the heart of the rose. Afterwards the city arms have shown only the rose, with the blue colour since the 15th century. The colour probably was chosen to distinguish the arms of similar arms showing a red rose.
