The chief, with the word LABOR (work) in it, means that it was because of all the work from it's "Unhas Negras" (Black Fingernails, workers' dirty hands from working hard) that Sao Joao da Madeira developed and became an emancipated town. The red factory records the industrial and developer spirit of the people of Sao Joao da Madeira; the garb points to the agricultural base (background) and the living habits of the people natural to Sao Joao da Madeira.
