Origin/meaning
Ulrichstein was founded in the 13th century and received city rights in 1347 from Heinrich von Eisenbach, ruling the city as vassal of the Dukes of Hessen.
The oldest seal of the city dates from the early 16th century and shows the striped lion of Hessen. A second seal dating from the 17th century shows the same lion. In the meantime in 1605 the arms of Ulrichstein were mentioned in a roll of arms as an uncrowned striped lion in a shield with a silver bordure. A little later the arms appeared in the collection of Siebmacher as a red lion with a blue bordure. Later images all showed a lion in a bordure, but the colours differed widely, and the lion was shown both crowned as well as uncrowned.
The above arms were finally granted in 1952 in well defined colours.
