CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL (Hamilton, Ontario)
Denomination : Anglican
Official blazon
Vert between in chief a bishop's mitre Or and in base barry wavy Argent Azure and Argent a cross crosslet Sable fimbriated Argent charged with a plate thereon the Chi Rho Sable; Motto: JUBILATE DEO
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on April 4, 2000.
The mitre signifies that Christ’s Church is the cathedral, or seat of the bishop, of the Diocese of Niagara. The white and blue wavy bars and the green background are taken from the arms of the Diocese. The cross crosslet is a symbol of the Christian faith, and the Chi Rho, the first letters of the Greek name for Christ, is traditionally associated with foundations with the Christ Church dedication. The black colour of the crosslet is an allusion to steel and simultaneously the City of Hamilton, also know as “Steel City”.
The motto is the opening of Psalm 100 and is translated as “Make a joyful noise onto the Lord”.
