SCHMIEDEFELD AM RENNSTEIG

State : Thüringen
District (Kreis) : Ilmkreis

Wappen von Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig

Official blazon

Gespalten von Rot und Gold; vorn eine gegengeschwungene, golden gekrönte, silberne Aspis; hinten auf grünem Berg eine schwarze, rot bewehrte Henne.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on February 7, 1994.

The right half shows a crowned snake, historically the symbol of blacksmiths and used both as a canting element (Schmiede is blacksmith) as well to symbolise the importance of iron mining and smithies for the local economy for many centuries. The red colour is the colour of the fire in the smithies. The left half shows the canting arms of the Counts of Henneberg (a hen on a mountain), who ruled the area until 1583.
