Origin/meaningThe arms show a city wall with gate flanked by a crescent and a small shield. The small shield probably replaced the sun, as sun and crescent are commonly used on medieval seals and refer to eternity (day and night). The small shield shows t he arms of the Lords of Schönburg, to whom the city belonged in the 14th century. The composition with the shield already appeared on the seal of 1576.
