Origin/meaning
Straelen was first mentioned as city in 1395, but it was known as a village since before 1281, when a local court was established. The first seals, dating from the early 15th century already show the arrow. It probably is a canting symbol (Strahl = Pfeil = arrow). It was the only object in the oldest seals, but in the 16th century it was combined with the figure of bishop Anno of Köln. The arms were officially granted in 1928 and again after the merger with Herongen in 1971.
