Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on December 17, 1910.

Ahlen got city rights in the early 13^th century and was part of the Amt Wolbeck of the Oberstift of Münster.

The oldest seal shows the canting eel (Aal) in a city gate, over which stands St. Bartholomew, the town's patron saint. From the end of the 17^th century only the eel was used, both on the seals as the arms of the city.
