BRÜNEN
State : Nordrhein-Westfalen
District (Kreis) : Wesel (until 1969 Rees)
Incorporated into : 1969 Hamminkeln
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on May 12, 1967.
The arms show a red bar, taken from the arm of the diocese of Münster and the escarbuncle of the Duchy of Kleve. The village was a possession of the Bishops of Münster until the 13th century. In the beginning of the 13th century the village was a loan of Münster, but the jurisdiction was transferred to the Duchy of Kleve. In 1572 the Protestant village of Brünen was officially exchanged with the Catholic village of Dingden, and the village was part of Kleve until 1803.
