Origin/meaning

Hungen received city rights in 1361 from Emperor Charles IV. The city at the time was ruled by the Lords of Münzenberg-Falkenstein. The oldest seal dates from the same time and already shows a tower with the small shield of the Counts of Münzenberg-Falkenstein. The latter was removed in the 15th century when the city became a possession of the Counts of Solms.

The present arms were granted in 1932 and restore the old arms of Münzenberg-Falkenberg, but the blue and gold colours of the shield and the tower are the colours of Solms.
