Origin/meaning
The Armenian Cross is a Latin cross, which bears on each of its sides a clover, symbol of the Trinity.
The star recalls the Blessed Virgin Mary. The moon is an ancient symbol of the Church: The Church shines not with its own light, but with that of Christ "(St. Ambrose).
The palm trees remind that both the Church of Catania and that of Cagliari were born from the "greatest" love of the martyrs - among whom St. Agata, St. Efisio, St. Euplio and St. Saturnino - who "donated their life as an act of love for God and for men "(Benedict XVI). The memory of the martyrs invites "to ask for the grace to live and die with the name of Jesus in the heart and on the lips" (Francis).
The motto - Gratia, misericordia, pax - is the greeting blessing that St. Paul addresses to Timothy, his "true son in faith", whom he himself has commissioned to preside over the Church of Ephesus (cf. 1 Tim 1, 2; 2 Tim 1, 2).
