Official blazon
Origin/meaning
The arms show a city wall with gate flanked by a crescent and a small shield. The small shield probably replaced the sun, as sun and crescent are commonly used on medieval seals and refer to eternity (day and night). The small shield shows t he arms of the Lords of Schönburg, to whom the city belonged in the 14th century. The composition with the shield already appeared on the seal of 1576.
Seal from around 1900 |
