Origin/meaning

The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, which dates from the early 16^th century. The lions are derived from the arms of the Counts of the Rhein, who ruled the town in the 14^th century and who granted the city rights. The meaning of the two so-called wolf's irons is not known.
