GIOVANNI FONTANA

Born: 1537

Coadjutor Bishop of Ferrara, 1589-1590; Titular Bishop of Nicopolis in Palaestina
Bishop of Ferrara, 1590-1611

Arms (crest) of Giovanni Fontana
Official blazon
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The quartered arms show a canting fountain (Fontana) and a ring. The ring refers to the bishop's gratitude towards Duke Alfonso II d'Este, for whom he held numerous diplomatic posts, and also towards the Este dynasty that governed the city and the duchy of Ferrara.

The arms can be found on the tombstone of the bishop in Ferrara and also in Vignola, in the house where he was born.
